The Sphinx is the oldest and longest stone sculpture from the 18th dynasty. Also called the "Horus of the Horizon" or the "Horus of the Necropolis," for the sun god that stands above the horizon. Abu Simbel includes two temples near Egypt's border with Sudan. Constructed for the Pharaoh Ramesses II, who reigned for 67 years during the 13th century BC (19th Dynasty). The temples were cut from the rock and shifted to higher ground in the 1960s as the waters of Lake Nasser began to rise following completion of the Aswan High Dam. The Egyptian Pyramids were built as tombs for the Pharaohs. There are more than 100 Egyptian pyramids, most built during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods.
